Our contribution for ELIXIR Belgium

What is ELIXIR?

ELIXIR Belgium logo

ELIXIR is an intergovernmental organisation that brings together life science resources from across Europe. These resources include databases, software tools, training materials, cloud storage and supercomputers. The goal of ELIXIR is to coordinate these resources so that they form a single infrastructure. This infrastructure makes it easier for scientists to find and share data, exchange expertise, and agree on best practices.

Belgium joined ELIXIR as a full member in November 2015. More information can be found on the ELIXIR Belgium website: www.elixir-belgium.org

What is our contribution?

In response to the increasing importance of bioinformatics in life science research, the VIB Bioinformatics Core is heavily involved in organising bioinformatics training courses that contribute to the generation of useful biological knowledge. The offering covers basic and intermediate trainings to the life sciences research community, focusing on the fields of bioinformatics, statistics, omics data analysis, programming, and HPC tools.

What is ELIXIR-TeSS?

ELIXIR-TeSS provides researchers with information about the bioinformatics training courses and materials available in Europe, and where they can be found. It does this through the Training eSupport System (TeSS) portal. The TeSS portal also allows you to:

    • •Create your own training packages
      •Browse training providers
•Use a workflow diagram to visualise learning steps
  • What is our contribution?

To foster international collaboration and increase the visibility of all Belgium training efforts, the VIB Bioinformatics Core stepped up to set up a Belgium ELIXIR training network.
All training web sites are semantically tagged according to bioschemas Life Science training material and event specification. In collaboration with the ELIXIR training coordinator, these metadata are aggregated from the respective web sites and deposited in the TeSS training portal: https://tess.elixir-europe.org.
